What are Photochromic Lenses?

Photochromic lenses sometimes referred to as transition lenses, are eyeglass lenses that will turn dark (resembling sunglasses) in sunlight and become clear again when indoors. Photochromic lenses have a built-in coating that activates when exposed to UV rays from the sun. This coating automatically adjusts its tint based on the amount of light absorbed, allowing the lens to act as a hybrid between a clear lens and a sunglass. These lenses work like magic, transforming whenever your feet step outdoors, whether the sky is cloudy or sunny. Scientifically speaking, the lenses change their darkness through a chemical coating that reacts to UV rays, thus explaining the change in tint.

How Do They Work?

When photochromic lenses are exposed to UV light, trillions of photochromic molecules in the lenses begin to change their structure. This reaction is what causes the lenses to darken. They do not need direct sunlight to work. And you don’t have to stand directly in the sun to get a dose of UV light. UV rays penetrate the clouds and your photochromic lenses will still be darkened on cloudy days. Once the UV light disappears, the process is reversed and the lenses become clear again.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Photochromic Lenses

So, are photochromic lenses worth it? Are they good for your eyes? You can make your own choice with the following descriptions

Advantages:

  • They may take some time to activate
  • Their response time is affected by cold weather
  • They may not work while you are driving

Disadvantages:

  • They may take some time to activate
  • Their response time is affected by cold weather
  • They may not work while you are driving

When Should You Wear Photochromic Lenses?

Photochromic lenses can be worn all day. They can be used just like regular eyeglasses. These lenses are good for everyone, especially for those who are constantly switching from outdoors to indoors, then their versatility will come in handy. The two main purposes of photochromic lenses are to protect your eyes from UV damage and to eliminate the need for a separate pair of prescription sunglasses.
Some people choose to wear photochromic lenses almost constantly. Their light-sensitive nature means they will adapt to your surroundings, ensuring you are always ready for a suddenly sunny day.

Where Can I Buy Photochromic Lenses

From what I can tell the aftermarket should have all the lenses you need, but only if you choose the right brand. Some brands of replacement lenses are so low quality that they not only don’t protect your eyes but can seriously damage your vision, which I suffered from. Luckily a friend recommended me a while ago a niche brand MryLens, they sell lenses on Amazon and their website, but they are not very well known so there is no brand premium, they just focus on lenses. If you need photochromic or any polarized lenses you might want to check them out, they have enough colors to choose from!
